{"id":1761727,"date":"2025-09-28T16:25:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T16:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/instatext.io\/?p=1761727"},"modified":"2026-02-05T10:38:31","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T10:38:31","slug":"what-to-know-about-ai-resistant-assignments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instatext.io\/what-to-know-about-ai-resistant-assignments\/","title":{"rendered":"What to know about AI-resistant assignments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/chriswestfall\/2023\/01\/28\/educators-battle-plagiarism-as-89-of-students-admit-to-using-open-ais-chatgpt-for-homework\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">89%<\/a> of students admitting to using ChatGPT for homework, educators are working to develop AI-resistant writing assignments that can minimise the use of artificial intelligence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of assignment is <a href=\"https:\/\/genai.uchicago.edu\/resources\/faculty-and-instructors\/strategies-for-designing-ai-resistant-assignments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">designed<\/a> to be as immune as possible to generative AI by including strategies that discourage its use and increase students&#8217; motivation to complete the task independently.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI-resistant writing assignments typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carleton.edu\/writing\/resources-for-faculty\/working-with-ai\/ai-resistant-assignments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">focus<\/a> on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Emphasising the writing process<\/strong>, not just the end product, so that students have to actively engage with each step in a way that\u2019s not easy for AI to replicate.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Making revision a central part <\/strong>of the assignment so that students think critically about their work and ideas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Including reflective writing <\/strong>to show how students are thinking about and developing their ideas and to demonstrate their intellectual involvement and growth.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>AI-resistant writing assignments often require students to actively participate in the writing process. For example, a history professor might ask students to submit a draft of their analysis of a historical event, revise it after peer feedback, and then submit a final paper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the process, the professor could ask questions that prompt students to reflect on the development of their understanding. Reading texts closely, encountering a problem, developing a plausible interpretation, and persuading readers of that interpretation\u2014these are the steps one must go through in order to write a good paper.
